This Saturday Benfica hosts Nacional da Madeira in the 18th round of the Bwin. 12 points separate 2nd place Benfica and 9th place Nacional. Last time Benfica and Nacional officially met was at the "Choupana"(Nacional's home grounds) back on the 9th of September. It was the third game for Benfica with Camacho at the helm, Benfica was coming off a win against Copenhagen and the Camacho factor seemed to be leading the team in the right path. Benfica won 3-0 with goals from Cardozo and Rui Costa in a game where Camacho played with 2 forwards.
For this game Camacho has called the following players:
Keepers - Quim and Butt
Defenders - Leo, Luisao, Edcarlos, Sepsi, Nelson and Luis Felipe
Midfielders - Katsouranis, Nuno Assis, Maxi, Rodriguez, Di Maria, and Petit.
Forwards - Adu, Cardozo, Nuno Gomes, Mantorras.
Rui Costa will be serving a 1 game suspension for accumulating 5 yellows, a fifth yellow that he picked up against Guimaraes, which should have resulted in a yellow for the defender instead of Rui Costa.
Leo returns to the game roster and seems to have recuperated from his back injury.
Also returning will be Luisao, who served a 1 game suspension.
David Luiz did not make the game roster, as the young Brazilian sprained his ankle last weekend and has been recuperating for the most part of the week
Without Rui Costa we will most likely see 2 forwards in action. With that being said, here's my projected line up.
Quim in goal; Nelson, Luisao, Edcarlos and Leo from right to left. In the midfield, Katsouranis and Petit will be in front of the defense, while Rodriguez(DiMaria) and Maxi will work the flanks. Up front it'll be Nuno Gomes and Cardozo, with Nuno Gomes being the link between midfield and the attack.
Rodriguez should be ready to go, but his start is doubtful, as Camacho has stated that for a player like Rodriguez, who relies heavily on changes of speed and acceleration, is a lot harder to be 100%. If he does start, he'll will most likely relegate DiMaria to the bench. It's a shame, because only continuity can better DiMaria's form and confidence. I can't see Camacho sitting Maxi to start DiMaria on the right though.
Look for Benfica to build up on the success they had this past weekend, when their hard work paid off and got them the win. They will once again come out strong and hope to go up early so that they can manage the game. It'll be interesting to see Benfica play without Rui Costa, who is clearly the brains of this team. I'm curious to see how the team will organize itself and establish a style of play without Rui Costa. On the other side of the ball, Fabio Coentrao will be in Nacional's starting 11, look for him to be ready to go also, as he will want to prove to Camacho that he can fight for a spot on the roster next season. Benfica's other new signing, no not Makukula, Rafik Halliche will be in the stands as he has been loaned out to Nacional.
Shouldn't be a very hard game for Benfica, playing at home, looking to build momentum for a very tough and crucial February

News Briefs
Makukula trained with the Benfica squad for the first time this morning, despite most of the team being indoors doing conditioning work, Makukula and four others jogged on the practice pitch.
Also present in that group of 5 was Bergessio, who after a month of trying to find a team returns to Benfica. Bergessio will not be back in Camacho's plans or lack thereof.
Benfica has signed another youngster, Nigeria's u-20 Ugo Akuchie. The 18 year old center forward, will be at the club's headquarters today to sign a contract that will bind him to benfica until 2012. Akuchie's destiny will most likely be the junior team, but will probably be part of some of the practices by the senior squad, as Camacho will like to observe him.
Rafik Halliche has been loaned to Nacional until the end of the season. He joins Fabio Coentrao in the Madeira Island.
Also going on loan is the Junior Ruben Lima. The 18 year old left back had been called up by Camacho for the last 2 games due to Leo's injury. Obviously Camacho feels this player needs more of a competitive atmosphere to develop, so he has been loaned out to Desportivo das Aves. He joins Romeu Ribeiro, Yu Dabao and Miguel Victor at Desportivo das Aves.

Benfica News 1/30
The biggest news out of the Benfica camp today is Makukula's signing. The portuguese International is apparently already in Lisbon and undergoing the usual physical before putting pen to paper, which should take place later on this afternoon.
According to Benfica, the forward will be the last acquisition of the January transfer window.

Also signing today is the youngster Vinicius. Vinicius is a 17 year old brazilian forward, who has shown great promise in one of Brazil's secondary divisions. Benfica will buy half the youngsters pass from Taboao da Serra, his former club. Vinicius will report to Junior coach, Joao Alves, where he will be given a closer look. There's also a possibility Vinicius might go back to Taboao da Serra until the end of the spring.

Rafik Halliche has also signed a contract valid for 4 seasons for a reported 300k. The under-21 Argelian international, completes his physical and has already worked out in Benfica's training grounds although by himself. The center back will most likely be on loan to another Portuguese Bwin team with preference to Estrela da Amadora. However, Estrela's center back position is deep and Haliche might be headed somewhere else. More on his destiny in the days to come.
Looking in on the CAN 08
Marc Zoro scored for the Ivory Coast against Mali, a game the Elephants won 3-0. Zoro started the last game of the group stages being that the Elephants were already qualified.
Binya started the second game of the group stages for Cameroon, as he has established himself as a starter. Cameroon beat Zambia 5-1, and will play Sudan this afternoon for a sport in the second round.
The Squad was back in training today, and the good news is that Leo seems to have fully recuperated, he trained regularly with the rest of the squad. Doing specific work, were Petit, David Luiz and Rui Costa. Rui Costa usually does specific work which emphasizes muscle recuperation. Rui Costa will be unavailable to play this weekend as he will serve a 1 game suspension from the accumulation of yellows, throughout the season. David Luiz seems to be the only one that will not be available to play this weeken. The central defender suffered an ankle sprain and is currently doing treatment only. Petit will most likely be available has he did light jogging around the field, as a precautionary measure.
In the coming days i will comment on all of Benfica's January acquisitions. The transfer window will close Thursday 8pm, Portugal time.

Looking ahead to February

The shortest month of the year will bring 6 games for Benfica. Between Bwin clashes, and the Portuguese Cup, Benfica will also play the first Uefa Cup round in February. Add a National team friendly date into the mix, and you have a very busy month for Benfica.
Here's a quick look
2/2 - Bwin - Nacional
2/6 - National team Friendlies
2/10 - Portuguese Cup - Pacos de Ferreira
2/14 - Uefa Cup 1st leg - Nurnberg
2/17 - Bwin @ Naval
2/21 - Uefa Cup Second leg - @ Nurnberg
2/24 - Bwin - Braga
Benfica will open up the month this weekend, when they host Nacional at Estadio da Luz. Nacional is currently 9th in the Bwin.
The following week, most of the nationals teams will be in action, as February 5th and 6th are FIFA designated dates for International friendlies. Away with their National teams will be: DiMaria, Cardozo, Maxi, Rodriguez, Katsouranis, Quim, Petit, Nuno Gomes, Luisao, and Sepsi. All of these players will not make their return to the team until Thursday to Friday(2/8) - Special attention should go towards the South American players, namely, DiMaria, Maxi, Rodriguez and Cardozo, who will have to travel to the American Continent to play their matches. Jetlag and lenghty travelling times will definetely be a factor and will condition how these players will come back to Benfica.
That weekend(2/10), the 5th round of the Portuguese Cup will be played. Benfica will host Pacos de Ferreira. Pacos de Ferreira is currently 15th and have not won a game away from home yet. Should be an easy game, but that will all depend on how healthy the "internationals" will return.
On February 14th, Benfica will open up their Uefa Cup campaign, at home against Nurnberg.
That following weekend(2/17) Benfica will travel to Naval for the Bwin. Naval is currently 14th in the Bwin.
February 21st will bring the second leg of the Uefa Cup and Benfica will travel to Germany to play Nurnberg.
To finish up the month(2/24), Benfica will host Braga, who is currently 7th in the Bwin. Braga is a very strong team and have picked up a couple of players to strengthen their squad, during the january transfer window.
Along with the 2 Uefa cup games, the game against Braga is probably the most crucial of the month, not only because of the degree of competitiveness and the worth of Braga, but because it is the game that preceeds Benfica's short trip to archrival's Sporting.

Guimaraes 1- Benfica 3 - Cardoshow!

Tonight, Benfica achieved probably the most important win of the season so far by beating Guimaraes 3-1. Playing away, with second place up for grabs, Benfica was able to win the game much due to team efficiency and spirit of sacrifice.
In my preview, i had mentioned how it wasn't going to be an easy game, as Guimaraes has a very good team and had not lost at home yet this season.
Camacho returned to the 4-2-3-1 but with a variant that i hadn't seen this up to this point, and that variant was the high pressure. That high pressure allowed Benfica to, not only take the initiative, but also to not let Guimaraes establish their game flow.
Camacho fielded the following players:
Quim in goal; Luis Felipe, Edcarlos, David Luiz and Nelson on the left. Petit and Katsouranis in front of the defense. Rui Costa in the middle, Maxi and DiMaria on the flanks, right and left respectively. Cardozo was the lone striker.
Benfica started the game well, quick on the ball and pressuring high. Camacho, who had criticized the team for not carrying the tactical training onto the field, looked like he got through the players this time, and the team pressured Guimaraes early, not waiting for Guimaraes to bring the game to them. Both teams knew of the importance of the game, and Benfica did what needed to be done when the game is of elevated importance, they pressured and went looking for the goal. A goal that ended up coming within the first 10 minutes of the game, at the 8th minute precisely. A rocket free kick from Cardozo's left foot from about 25 yards out, which gave no chance to Guimaraes' keeper. Cardozo had taken at least 2 or 3 from that spot in previous games, and all were very close. This time he struck gold. Benfica continued their pressure and did not allow Guimaraes to touch the ball around, both Petit and Katsouranis were winning most of the balls in midfield, fruit of the pressure on the ball carrier. When Benfica got the ball they would try to go forward with speed. It was in one of those speedy transitions that Di Maria was able to escape his defender down the left side, after chasing a ball that was headed out of bounds, DiMaria was able to beat his defender and come into the box where he found Maxi who tapped the ball in for Benfica's second goal, 26 minutes had gone by. Benfica took advantage of the opportunities they created and that efficiency propelled the team into a better game controlling position. David Luiz got injured during the first half (midway i believe), and I'm trying to understand why it took so much time for Benfica's bench to make the change. Change which would eventually happen right before the half, with Assis coming into the game. Katsouranis dropped into the middle of the defense, while Maxi shifted over to the d-mid slot, giving Assis the right mid position.
Benfica went into the locker room feeling good about the first half, their pressuring efforts gave them a comfortable lead and playing away against a difficult adversary doesn't always afford you that luxury.
The second half would turn out to be a lot different, Guimaraes came out and took the reigns of the game. In the first 20 minutes, the Guimaraes men, gave their all to get back into the game, they were more dangerous, and had several flank incursions that could have brought a lot of danger to the Benfica goal. Guimaraes would eventually end up getting their goal right at the 60 minute mark from a dead ball situation, but weren't able to do much after that, perhaps running out of gas.
Benfica was able to manage the game defensively and put out the initial pressure Guimaraes had come out with.
Freddy Adu came in in the 76th minute for the exhausted DiMaria. Freddy came into the game with defense in mind, I'm sure he was told to defend first, as he played a lot more back than what he usually does, which affected his game. Nuno Gomes came in for Rui Costa in the 85th minute in another refreshing effort by Camacho. Cardozo put the icing on the cake in the dying minutes of the second half after the Guimaraes keeper came out to clear a ball that struck Cardozo's body and dropped right in front of his left foot which would direct the ball into an empty net.
Precious win for Benfica, first time beating a team in the top 6, inflicting the first home loss to Guimaraes, and coming away with a high morale from the win.
The player's efforts won this game, and while there's still a lot of improving the team needs to do, the win lifts off some of the pressure and gives the team a mental boost for the games to come.
Few praises
Cardozo - probably the best game i have seen him play with a Benfica jersey, and while the goals are important, what really impressed me, was his work rate and his playing, especially his aerial playing. Cardozo is on the rise, and there has been a significant improvement in his playing and how he plays the opposite defenders. He is slowly learning how to play by himself up front, not always an easy task.
DiMaria - Another best game with a Benfica jersey performance. His quickness is his biggest weapon, Di Maria seems to have a gear that very few have, and while some of that speed is still lacking some sync with his footwork, some of the displays today, especially the one he assisted Maxi, are a sign of what he can do. He still needs to do a lot of work to become better, but don't all 19 year olds?
- Maybe it was the jersey he played with, it read "DiMaira" -
(mental note - remember to check the spelling on the back of every jersey i buy at Estadio da Luz)
The team - The team had to reach down inside and find the motivation for this game, after withstanding criticism from all angles, because of their less than positive recent results, the team responded well to the challenge they had this week. A lot of sacrifice, a lot of teammates helping each other, clearly a team with a goal and determination to work hard to achieve that goal. Kudos! - let's hope that they can build on this.
Individually:
Quim - 7
Luis Felipe - 6 (5 in the first half 7 in the second)
Edcarlos - 6 (still has a lot of work to do to adapt to the Portuguese game)
David Luiz - 6 (i hope his ankle twist is not serious)
Nelson - 7
Petit - 7
Katsouranis - 7
Rui Costa - 7
Maxi - 7
DiMaria - 7
Cardozo - 8
Assis - 6
Adu - 5
Nuno Gomes - 5

Guimaraes - Benfica Preview

Benfica travels to Portugal's birth city to play locals Vitoria de Guimaraes. Not an easy game for Benfica, as Guimaraes, despite having been promoted this year, is having a great year.
Guimaraes is currently 3rd, 2 points behind Benfica with 28 points, from a 8-4-4 record. That record also shows no home losses in the Bwin. So despite having their second place at risk, Benfica will also try to inflict Guimaraes their first home loss this season.
For this game Camacho has called the following players:
Keepers - Butt and Quim;
Defenders - Luís Filipe, Nélson, Edcarlos, David Luiz and Sepsi;
Midfielders - Petit, Katsouranis, Rodriguez, Maxi Pereira, Rui Costa, Di María, Adu and Nuno Assis
Forwards - Nuno Gomes, Mantorras and Cardozo.
Looking at the call up list, both Luisao and Leo are missing, the first one is serving a 1 game suspension from picking up 5 yellows, the second one is still troubled by a back injury and has not made a full recovery. Both Petit and Rodriguez return to the game roster, both recuperated from muscular injuries that kept them out of action. The most notable change to the game roster is the debut of Sepsi. Camacho had called a junior left back in the previous game, but with Sepsi at an acceptable stamina level, the young Romanian gets the call.
Call me skeptical, but i see Camacho going back to the 4-2-3-1 for this game. Despite the team being more productive with 2 forwards, Camacho will most likely go with his preferred tactical system in order to control the midfield. Unless, he feels Petit is not 100%, then he will most likely just go with Katsouranis in front of the defense.
Here's the probable 4-2-3-1
Quim in goal, Luis Felipe, Edcarlos, David Luiz and Nelson, from right to left. Katsouranis and Petit ahead of the defense. Rui Costa, DiMaria and Maxi in the midfield. Nuno Gomes up front.
If Camacho decides to go with the 4-1-3-2 it will look something like this
Quim and the same back 4, Katsouranis as the lone D-mid, Rui Costa in the middle, Di Maria on one side, Maxi on the other. Nuno Gomes supporting Cardozo up front.
We will most likely see Rodriguez sometime in the second half, i don't think he'll start as he only completed one full training session this week, and will not hold the 90 minutes. The rest of the subs will be based on the tactical set up Camacho decides to go with. In the event of Benfica only starting with one forward, you can bet on seeing another forward coming into the game in detriment of a midfielder.
Not an easy game for Benfica, Benfica is currently going through a tough moment having obtained less than positive results in the past couple of games, results that have also gone hand in hand with less than desirable performances. Camacho has recently made statements to the media in an attempt to challenge his players to perform better. This will be the game to do it, to prove that the team still has a pulse. The league might be a distant spec on the horizon, but there's still a lot up for grabs. One of the things up for grabs is a Champions League spot, and this game is crucial because it is against one of teams in the fight for that spot.
Coincidentally Benfica has not beaten any teams that are currently in the top 6 (Porto,Sporting, Guimaraes, Setubal and Braga).
A loss in Guimaraes would finally establish the team's mediocre potential this season. Luis Felipe Vieira spoke of the best squad in 20 years before the beginning of the season, and perhaps the expectations he gave all Benfica fans were unrealistic. The truth is that the squad is unbalanced and lacks the necessary depth to compete in all of the competitions Benfica is and was involved in. Camacho inherited the squad from Fernando Santos, and he has had a lot of work to do. I'm not saying that he doesn't have something to do with Benfica's current situation, i'm saying he got a slow start and he hasn't been able to put the team playing attractive soccer. Part of it, off course, falls on his insistence on playing in the 4-2-3-1 without the right personnel. That to me is one of Camacho's biggest downfalls. The other part lies on the inability that Benfica has to acquire above average level players, which has nothing to do with Camacho and all to do with Benfica's leadership, but that's a whole discussion all together.
In conclusion, look for a very competitive game with Benfica needing to step it up to the plateau it needs to be in - one of the big 3 in Portugal. The league may be out of reach but giving other teams a chance to fight for second place, is something that shouldn't be allowed by Benfica.
I'm curious to see how the team will respond to Camacho's challenge.
Miki Feher died 4 years ago this past friday, playing against Guimares, I'm sure he will be in many people's minds.
In the first half it was like this. (Camacho's first game at the helm)

January 25th
JANUARY 25
Perhaps a date etched in many Benfiquistas' minds. The date is synonymous with 2 opposite poles of emotions for Benfiquistas. On one side, the birthdate of Benfica's most Iconic player, Eusebio.
On the other end, the date in which Miklos Feher passed during a Benfica game.
Undoubtedly the best Portuguese player of all time, Eusebio is a name that in itself is Benfica. Eusebio is known throughout the world has one of the best players of his era, helping Portugal reach the semifinals of a World Cup for the first time in 66.
His resume includes:
1 European Championship 61/62
2 European Championship finals 62/63,64/65, and 67/68
11 National titles
5 Portuguese Cups
As you all know, the man needs no introduction, he is the Best there ever was to put on a Benfica jersey.I had a chance to have lunch with this legend back in 95. In one of his many trips to the North American continent, Eusebio had a layover in Newark from Massachusetts and me and a friend of mine, with connections to Benfica, picked him up at the airport and brought him to the ironbound section of Newark, we had lunch at El Pastor, a well known Portuguese restaurant. I must tell you that you can't meet a nicer person, down to earth and open, always willing to talk Benfica. I stood in awe of his presence at first but his personality quickly put me at ease. When it came time to pay the Restaurant's owner refused to bring the bill, bringing only a few plates for the "Panther" to sign. That is probably a memory i will cherish for the rest of my life, and while i never had a chance to see him play live, his presence alone was enough to make me realize who he is, and what he has accomplished, as he is a living legend.
On this date he reaches his 66th birthday, I want to send out a birthday wish to Eusebio, and wishes of seeing him reaching many more in the eyes of all Benfiquistas.
Also on this date, perhaps on of the saddest days for Benfica as a club, the death of Miklos Feher.
Miklos died on the field 4 years ago. Coincidentally in a game against Guimaraes(Benfica's next adversary), with Camacho at the helm. It was a loss that shook up the Benfica nation, and the whole country. Benfica has since then retired "Mikis" 29 jersey. 4 years later and you can still see a banner in the stadium with the Hungarians name and/or number.
Rest in Peace Miki, gone but never forgotten.

Looking In on the CAN 08

Benfica has two players playing in the African Nations Cup, Marc Zoro who is part of the Ivory Coast squad and Gilles Binya who is part of Cameroon's Indomitable Lions.
The Ivory Coast was in action against Nigeria this past Monday, Marc Zoro watched from the bench while Chelsea's Malouda got the winning goal as the Elephants beat Nigeria 1-0.
Today,Cameroon played the reigning champions Egypt and lost, despite Samuel Etoo's 2 goal effort. The final score was 4-2, with both Zidan and Rabou getting 2 goals a piece for the Pharaos. Bynia came in in the 38th minute in an effort to reinforce the midfield as the Lions were down by 2, sixteen minutes into the first half.
Former Portuguese colony, Angola, will play their first game of the tournament this wednesday against group D favorites, South Africa

Benfica News January 21
Rafik Halliche will be arriving in Lisbon this thursday/friday, to go through medical tests and to sign a contract with Benfica. The 21 year old Argelian promise, is hoping he can integrate the squad, although Camacho did not ask for a center back. The player's most probable destiny will most likely be a loan. Petit will most likely miss the upcoming Guimaraes game, as he continues to recuperate from a micro muscle tear. Benfica is using all the precautions in relation to Petit's injury, as they would like for Petit to make a full recuperation before he plays again, in order to avoid a re-injury. Rodriguez's recuperation is in its last stages and the Uruguyan will most likely integrate team training this tuesday. Leo doesn't see like he will be ready to go this weekend, as he is currently suffering from a back injury an injury that has plagued the Brazilian over the years. This week is a crucial week for Benfica as far as new signings go, Luis Felipe Vieira hopes to sign both a forward and a right winger this week.
Above is today's cover of "A Bola"- "Camacho's criticism shakes up the locker room"
According to "A Bola" players are surprised by Camacho's words.
If you recall, it was the second time that Camacho has publicly criticized the players after a bad performance. In his last statement, right after the Feirense game, Camacho criticized the players for not carrying what is done on the practice field on the the game, in the way of ball pressure and better ball management.
Click on the link Below for more.
Camacho has also mentioned how the team seemed to have suffered a mental breakdown after they were eliminated from the Champions League. Despite the lead to Porto being 11 points the team needs to find a way to keep playing. The truth is that Benfica has not put in a good performance for a while now. I can understand the players not carrying what they practice on the practice pitch on to the game, but the one thing i don't understand is the mental aspect. As a coach it is your duty to motivate the players and to mentally prepare them for each game. If the motivation is not there, then Camacho is obviously doing something wrong, which leads me to believe he is losing control of the team.
On other News:
Cardozo, picked up a yellow card during saturday's game for giving his jersey to a fan. Apparently when Cardozo went out for his warm-up, a fan asked for his jersey. Cardozo, told the fan that if he went into the game and scored, he would give the fan his jersey, the Benfica equipment manager was not ready for this and was forced to run down to the locker room to grab another "7" jersey for Cardozo, who had to wait on the sidelines until he had a new jersey.
Sepsi is now fully integrated with the squad, and currently his training regiment is the same as the team's.

Benfica 1 - Feirense - 0 - Cardozo decides
Before I start, i wanted to thank all of you that followed my live commentary here on this blog. I had a lot of fun doing it and i hope you enjoyed it as much as i did and found it helpful.
I wanted to start this post by saying a couple of things. that i did not watch the game, i did follow the game live on Portuguese radio, but there were times where the radio would interrupt the broadcast from Estadio da Luz and go to Sporting's game, leaving Benfiquistas in the dark of what was going on. With that being said, i can't really give you a fair review of the game. I will however, review the game based on what i was able to listen to and what I have read.
Benfica advances into the next round of the Portuguese Cup by beating Feirense at home. A game in which the result was way better than the exhibition. Feirense, currently 10th in the Vitalis league, came to Lisbon and played their hearts out, always looking Benfica in the eye, but feeling the responsibility of the game and the intimidation that a game of this dimension can bring.
Benfica on the other hand, continues to thread dangerous water and can't seem to come out of the "slump" they are currently in. Today's game was a perfect opportunity for the team to get back on the right path, not only on the winning but also on the good performance path, and although the first one was achieved the second one failed, and that worries all Benfiquistas, who know that it's time to sound the alarm.
Camacho started the following players:
Butt in goal, Luis Felipe, Luisao, Edcarlos and Nelson on the left. Katsouranis and Maxi played in front of the defense, while Rui Costa, Assis and Di Maria formed the attacking trident that supported Nuno Gomes.
Once again we're back to the 4-2-3-1. But this time it was an odd 4-2-3-1 as Maxi and Assis both alternated between the middle of the field and the right flank, something that not only broke Benfica's own game flow, it also turned the right side of the attack in a complete unknown and an authentic waste as far as attacking chances from that side, Camacho did make an adjustment to the right side, making Assis the steady right winger, which bettered things a little bit.
One forward against a team from Portugal's second flight?!?!?. You have to be kidding me!! - Which coach wouldn't field a more attack minded team against a weaker team? and when i say attack minded i'm talking about 2 forwards.
The first half, from what i read was not so bad, with the best period coming in the last 10 minutes of the half. Katsouranis hit the cross bar in a play where the Feirense men struggled to clear the ball, in the last 10 minutes Benfica stepped up their cruising pace and brought danger to the Feirense goal, but Benfica just couldn't close the deal.
Cardozo and Adu jumped off the bench into warm up right before the half, in a move that showed that Camacho wasn't happy with what was going on. In my opinion, 45 minutes too late. Both players came on at the start of the half, Cardozo in for Maxi and Adu for DiMaria. 6 minutes later Cardozo would put Benfica ahead after scrapping up a couple of rebounds. Cardozo is still far from the 20 goal mark, but the truth is that he has scored very important goals for Benfica. After the goal, Benfica lost any of the motivation they came into the game with(little), and they allowed Feirense to play. Feirense was clearly better in the second half, having wasted crucial opportunities, one of them, an authentic gift from Butt. Butt saved a shot to the front of the box, where a feirense player, incredibly missed.
I'm not going to criticize the team any longer, as i am going on limited knowledge of the real events, but something is wrong with Benfica. Camacho claims that the players lack desire and will to win. There is a clear lack of confidence in certain players. When the oldest player on your team carries the whole team, there's definitely something wrong. It's time to go back to the drawing board, clean the slate and start fresh, the Uefa Cup will start in February and if Benfica can't improve, we will be in for a lot of embarrassment.
So far, there haven't been any new signings that will give me any confidence on this team being able to achieve anything this season. Mid-Week, Benfica signed Sepsi for the left back position, which was one of the positions that we needed to deepen. But where's the right winger? where's the forward?.
Camacho claims that Benfica has lost out on some of the men he wanted, stating several reasons for it, from financial to prestige as some of the target's choice criteria.
It is now the 19th of January and the team continues unbalanced, and needing crucial pieces in order to improve. The team hasn't had a good performance in a while, and Benfiquistas have started to grow disenchanted with the team, and losing faith that the team can win any type of trophy this season.
Camacho continues to have to do a lot of work with this team, he needs to mentally recuperate this team, and quickly. I would say that he also needs to possibly abandon the 4-2-3-1 and figure out a different system.
Adu got 30 minutes, in what it seemed like a good outing, combined well with Rui Costa in a few opportunities, and had a couple o shots that found opposition bodies blocking the goal. Nonetheless, Adu exhibits a lot more confidence than many other players out there. I know that his integration is a slow and delicate process, but he should be getting a lot more playing time. What does Camacho have to lose? I don't think it can get any worst than what it is. Adu deserves more than 10 minutes every game. He can't do much worst than DiMaria, or even Maxi. I'm just wondering how long it will take Camacho to realize this.
This upcoming weekend Benfica will travel to Guimaraes in a game that will be all but easy for Benfica, not to mention there will be points up for grabs because Porto and Sporting play each other.

Benfica - Feirense - Portuguese Cup Preview

The fifth round of the Portuguese Cup will be played this weekend. After having played another Bwin team in the 4th round, Benfica has an easier task this time, they will play against Feirense, a team from the Vitalis league ( Portugal's second division). it is the perfect game to "shakeoff" the negative moment that the team is currently going through. After 2 consecutive ties for the Bwin, Benfica will look to get back on the winning track against a considerably weaker team.
Camacho called the following players for this game:
Keepers: Butt and Moreira;
Defenders: Luisão, Luís Filipe, Nélson, Edcarlos, David Luiz and Ruben Lima;
Midfielders: Katsouranis, David Simão, Rui Costa, Maxi Pereira and Assis;
Forwards: Nuno Gomes, Mantorras, Di Maria, Adu and Cardozo.
Notable absences are the ones of Leo, Quim, Petit and Rodriguez.
Leo is currently suffering from a back injury and will not be available to play. Also out with injuries are Petit and Rodriguez, both with muscular ailments. Quim on the other hand, was left out by Camacho's choice. It is customary that second keepers get the start on domestic cup games, so Camacho has chosen Butt and Moreira for this match.
David Simao and Ruben Lima are juniors that have earned a call up, with the first one being his first ever call up.
Camacho has already confirmed that Nelson will be on the left, Edcarlos in the center of the defense with Luisao, and Katsouranis will start in the defensive midfield slot.
The rest of the starting 11 won't be much of a mistery, with the chance of 1 or 2 new faces in the starting 11.
Here is my projected line up:
Butt in goal, although Moreira wouldn't be a surprise. In defense, Luis Felipe, Luisao, Edcarlos and Nelson on the left. Katsouranis will play in front of the defense, as Camacho manifested that Katso is in conditions to play. DiMaria, Maxi and most likely Rui Costa will play in the midfield. I say most likely Rui Costa, because there is a chance Nuno Assis might get the start in the playmaker role. Up front, I'm expecting Cardozo and Nuno Gomes.
Don't be surprised if either Adu or Mantorras surprise everyone and get a start, it would be the perfect game for one of them to get the minutes.
It shouldn't be a hard game for Benfica, who despite playing a much weaker team, have the added pressure of having to deliver in front of their fans. Benfica's fan base is growing restless with the team's recent lackluster performances, and the team feels that a good result could silence some of the critics that are coming out every day.
So, easy game, but imperative win.
The game will not be televised, i am currently exploring the possibility of liveblogging the game so that you have an opportunity to follow the game. The game is @ 16.00 (local time) 11.00 if you are in the US' east coast(EST).
At this time there is a strong chance i will liveblog the game, so check back later on for confirmation or tomorrow before the game starts.

Danilinho wanted by Benfica
![]()
Latest news tell of Benfica's interest in Danilinho. Danilinho is a 20 year old forward that currently plays for Atletico Mineiro and was part of Brazil's u-20 team that played last years U-20 World Cup in Canada.
Danilinho is Benfica's target for the right side of the attack. Currently doing Atletico Mineiro's pre-season,Danilinho's pass is currently split in 2, with 50% belonging to Atletico Mineiro and the other 50% to Giulliani Bertolucci, a well known soccer agent with ties to Benfica.

Guess Who's Back?

Katsouranis practiced with the team this morning and spoke to the media after the training session.
Katso admitted that what happened in Setubal was an isolated bad moment on his part, justifying that he has never done anything like it in his whole career.
He seemed to have accepted Benfica's decision, which he claims was justified being that it was the second infraction to the clubs rules in a short period of time. If you recall, Katsouranis arrived past the stipulated time from X-mas break, an infraction which the club punished with a fine.

....and the next signing is... Makukula?!?

The latest rumor is that Makukula is close to signing with Benfica.
The deal is supposed to go down tomorrow, in a meeting that will involve representatives from Sevilha, Maritimo, Benfica as well as Makukula's representative.
Benfica will pay Sevilha 4mm and will loan Maritimo a couple of players to compensate for Makukula.
I don't know how true this rumor is but, if Benfica does in fact sign Makukula, i think it'll be a good signing.
************UPDATE****************
All 3 parties have denied the existence of any talks about Makukula - Benfica, Sevilha and Maritimo

Petit Out for 2 weeks
According to Reports coming out of the Caixa Futebol Campus, Petit has suffered a minor tear in his hamstring and will be out of action for 2 weeks, which would rule him out of this weekend's Portuguese Cup match.
Rodriguez, will be available for Saturday's Portuguese Cup match, despite still going through specific physical work as a result of the injury he suffered against Belenenses.
The new signing, Sepsi, is currently going through a stamina building program, before joining the rest of the squad, in their daily training regimen.
With Petit being out, we will most definetely see a new defensive midfielder for this Saturday's Portuguese Cup against Feirense.
Benfica has already used, Edcarlos,Binya, Katsouranis, Petit, Romeu Ribeiro, and Maxi in the position.
Katsouranis will most likely be back in training tomorrow, as his suspension will draw to a close, however, He will not be fit to play, as he has not practiced with the team for over a week. Romeu Ribeiro is out on loan, Binya is away in the CAN. Camacho has 3 options, Maxi, Fellipe Bastos and Edcarlos. If you remember, the junior Fellipe Bastos has been working out with the senior squad since arriving in Portugal, due to Binya's international call up. Maxi and Bastos are the main candidates to the spot. Camacho's choice will most likely fall on Maxi, even though that is not a position he's very accustomed to. Personally, i'd like to see the young Brazilian get the start, but following Camacho's logic i'm almost certain it'll be Maxi. It would be a great opportunity for the young Brazilian, as the adversary is not as strong.

Laszlo Sepsi - #33

Benfica introduced their first winter signing this afternoon. His name is Laszlo Sepsi, a 21 year old left back that can also play in the center of the defense or even in the defensive mid slot. Benfica bought Sepsi from Romania's Bistrita, for a not yet disclosed sum. Sepsi is the starting left back for Romania's U-21 national team and will most likely be part of the squad that will play Euro 08 this summer.
It is not the first time out of Romania for Laszlo Sepsi, as the player had a short experience in France with Rennes, back in the season of 05/06. Sepsi was brought to Rennes by Laszlo Bolloni (former Sporting coach) but his experience wasn't the best, and as Bolloni exited Rennes, so did Sepsi, returning to his country to play for Bistrita. Two years later and clearly more mature, Sepsi is being compared in Romania to Chivu, for his strength and technique, and Benfica sees Sepsi has the future.
Sepsi is the first product of Benfica's prospection department that is currently headed by Rui Aguas. According to Luis Felipe Vieira, the player was observed 10 times, all during live action by Benfica's scouts.
According to Luis Felipe Vieira, all of Benfica's signings, going forward, will be under the advisement of the prospection department. Luis Felipe Vieira also told the reporters that Sepsi is the first of a few winter signings for Benfica.
He also had time to acknowledge Benfica's less than favorable current situation, and added that Benfica will be initiating a positive cycle promptly.

After Thoughts - Benfica v Leixoes
It is time for some serious questions.
Didn't Fernando Santos get sacked after a draw with Leixoes?
This is the first thought that came to mind after I watched a dismal effort from the team. Taking nothing away from the opposition, unlike our squad, they came out to play. I'm losing faith in Camacho's ability to put a winning side on the pitch. One week they come out and look in excellent form, the next its a draw or a loss. In my last post I said that if Camacho did not change his formation, all will be lost this season. His formation changed this week, but to an ineffective 4-3-3, and this tells me two things:
1) Camacho does not have the insight to see that his club is currently built for the 4-4-2.
2) All will be lost this season.
What Benfica can do to fix this team?
I'm starting to shift from popular belief that we need new signings to start winning. We see that Cardozo can perform when paired with a 9/9.5 and we know the kind of effort Nuno Gomes brings to the table. Freddy Adu? it should be illegal the little playing time he gets, Di Maria has played well so far and Mantorras can be counted on for a golo now and again. New signings do not mean we will start winning because it comes down to one thing; how you use the personell you have. It is a very basic principle that is practiced not just in futebol, but also in business. You can have a great player, but if you utilize that player incorrectly, whats the point of signing him? A good manager knows how to use the strengths of his people for the benefit of the team.
So I pose one question to you fellow benfiquistas:
Should Jose Antonio Camacho get sacked after a draw with Leixoes?

Benfica 0 - Leixoes 0 - New Signings Needed!!
In their first home game of the new year, Benfica could not beat 14th place Leixoes and loses another 2 points to leaders Porto, who have increased their lead to 11 points. A lead that will most likely be enough to bring in their 3rd league title in as many years. Some of you might think that there's still a lot of games to be played and that it's not over yet, blah, blah, blah. The reality is that Benfica has a better chance of bringing Fernando Santos back than to win the league title this season. That is the the reality. In a game where Benfica was a clear favorite going into the game, Benfica didn't show enough arguments during the game to come away with the 3 points.
Maybe i'm being a little bit too harsh, but the Benfica i saw tonight, is not a Benfica that can challenge for the the title. Not being able to beat a 14th place team in front of your home crowd can only illustrate the point I made above.
On to the game
Camacho started the exact 11 i had predicted:
Quim in goal. Leo, David Luiz, Luisao and Nelson were the back four from left to right. Petit played in front of the defense, while Di Maria, Rui Costa and Maxi formed the midfield line. Up front it was Nuno Gomes supporting Cardozo.
Rodriguez was not fully recuperated and DiMaria got another golden opportunity to prove himself before he loses the spot to a much strong Rodriguez.
I waited for this game with a lot of anticipation, after all, how often does Benfica play with 2 forwards? Could this be the game that would convince Camacho that this is the way we should be playing? I was sure that this would be the game where everything clicked. It was a rough week for the team, and i was sure the team was going to come out and prove to their fan base that the incident from Saturday is behind them and come out more united than ever, with that unity being the main catalyst to a convincing win. Boy, was I wrong.
Benfica started well, and took control of the game from the start, their first sign of danger came at the 15th minute mark, when Nuno Gomes saw his goal being called back after he was mistakenly adjudged off-side. It was the first and only clear chance for Benfica in the first half, a Benfica too dependent on Rui Costa's play, with Petit and Luisao very far from their ideal form , and without someone who could penetrate the final third with enough danger to provide any real arguments to change the scoreboard.
Di Maria continues to not impress me, and often complicates the game with his exaggerated dribbling and wrong decisions ( is anyone working with DiMaria in training? He seems to make the same mistakes over and over). On the right, Maxi continues to prove Camacho wrong, as the Spaniard insists on Maxi to be the best man for the position.
With the exception of Nuno Gomes "off-side" goal, Benfica didn't do much else to justify being on top. Granted that the goal could have very well given the game a different direction, Benfica did nothing else to justify being on top at the halfway mark.
The second half brought more of the same Benfica, a team without arguments to dominate, a team without players who can make a difference, with the exception of Rui Costa. On the other side of the ball, Leixoes seemed to have gotten a shot of confidence in the locker room and were now the team creating danger, with a few very close chances that include a couple balls hitting the crossbar and post.
Camacho made the right players enter the field as subs but all of the moves he made as a result were all wrong.
At the 60 minute mark, Camacho brought in Assis, for Nelson!?!. Nelson had been playing well and it made no sense taking him out, after all he has speed and is able to do the right corridor with ease. Maxi backed into Nelson's spot while Assis switched with Di Maria. Another stroke of genius by Mr Camacho, why would you put Assis on the left and DiMaria on the right when Assis, strongest foot is the right and DiMaria's is the left?? I'm still trying to figure out this move.
As a result of this move, Both DiMaria and Assis were now dribbling into the interior of the field as all wrong footed players have the tendency to do. Not only did Camacho lose the width of the field, he also caused Benfica's offensive game to be funneled towards the center, where the Leixoes could very easily defend.
The second substitution of the evening, at the 73rd minute mark, brought in Benfica's older talisman, Mantorras. Mantorras came in for Cardozo. Another genius move, with the game coming to an end, why would you pull out the one player who can win head balls in the box and is also your biggest inside the box target?
Freddy Adu came in the 78th minute for Di Maria. DiMarias' exit was not as bad as the previous 2 moves, but keeping Freddy on the right seemed to make the substitution look bad. Benfica still had a couple of last gasp chances, but Leixoes' keeper was able to thwart them with a couple instinctive saves. Benfica finished the game, and despite having a valid case on the goal that was disallowed, they can't be happy with the way they played, and come off the field with the feeling that they didn't do much to deserve the 3 points.
Individually
Quim - 6
Leo - 7
David Luiz - 7
Luisao - 5
Nelson - 6
Petit - 6
Rui Costa - 8
DiMaria - 5
Maxi - 5
Nuno Gomes - 5
Cardozo - 6
Mantorras - 5
Assis - 6
Adu - 5
After a turbulent week, Benfica fails to shake off the dark cloud that has parked itself over the team. It's been 12 days since the start of the market and Benfica as yet to sign a player. It's hard to believe how Benfica has not signed anyone, after all, the squad's deficiencies were identified a while ago, and with the reportedly 20mm in transfer funds available, it just baffles me how Benfica has not been able to secure the services players that were referenced by Camacho to improve the team.
They sold a player, that is probably the most sought after player in Brazil, for 3.75mm and 2 exhibition matches in the USA, which was under the stipulated price of 4mm, and big name signings are nowhere to be found.
Camacho seems a shadow of himself these days, with his passive posture on the bench, a far cry from the Camacho that shouted instructions continously into the field from a few years back. It's almost as if he has conformed to Benfica's current state, and feels that the team has reached its full potential, and can't do better.
At the end of the game he spoke of the mental breakdown the team suffered following the team's Champions League exit, and the lack of attitude and aggressiveness by the team.
Hello!!! You're the coach, coach the team!! That's why you are there, to recuperate the team mentally from less than favorable situations, to help them through tough periods, to motivate them for the future. The Champions League has been over for a while, and all of the sudden the team's exit from the competition is being seen as some type of a turning point, of the season? His coaching leaves much to be desired too as of late.
In my opinion, the league is lost, let's concentrate on the direct CL access, the Portuguese Cup and a decent showing in the Uefa Cup, which can only happen if good signings are made.
To finish up -
It looks like Benfica is about to sign Romania's U-21 left back, Lazslo Sepsi for 2.5mm. Benfica beat out Dynamo and Steaua of Bucharest. The player is already in Lisbon and attended tonight's game.. Diego Souza's 3.75mm Euros at work.
Leave your rants on the comment box bellow, it will help you feel better, trust me.

Benfica - Leixoes Preview
After a less than quiet week in the Benfica camp , Benfica starts up the second round of the Bwin hosting Leixoes. Leixoes is currently 14th in the Bwin with 15 points, coming from 2 wins, 9 ties and 4 losses. Leixoes tied Benfica in the first match of the season, a match that dictated the sacking of Fernando Santos. It'll be a much
different game than the game from the first half of the season, but nonetheless a difficult game for Benfica, as all small teams will put in the extra effort to beat Benfica. Benfica will be playing their first home game of the year, after week of much speculation on the teams unity, much of the fans will be looking to see how the team responds after Saturday's fiasco. Both Nuno Gomes and Rui Costa spoke to the media this week and stated that the situation is done and over with, and the team is as close as it could be and they have moved on.
Camacho has called the following players:
Keepers:Butt and Quim;
Defenders: Luís Filipe, Luisão, Léo, Nelson, Edcarlos and David Luiz;
Midfielders: Petit, Maxi Pereira, Rui Costa, Di Maria, Nuno Assis and Cristian Rodriguez;
Forwards: Nuno Gomes, Mantorras, Adu and Cardozo
Katsouranis is the notable absence, as he is currently suspended by the club. Binya as been officially selected to represent Cameroon in the Can 08, and will be away for most of the month of January and some of February.
Making their way back into the game roster are Leo and Nuno Gomes. Leo was suffering from a cold and did not suit up last weekend, while Nuno Gomes seems to have made a full recovery from his abdominal injury.
Christian Rodriguez who had to be subbed in the 30th minute of last Saturday's game due to a hamstring injury was doubtful all week but seems to have recovered to make the game roster.
Looking at the list of players selected, you can make a quick observation.
Petit is the only true defensive midfielder, being that that Camacho heavily favors the 4-2-3-1, it is almost certain that Camacho will change his tactical formation to a 4-4-2. Although, Benfica usually plays with 2 forwards against weaker teams, it's almost certain that the 4-4-2 will be in full effect, much to the delight of many. But then again, Maxi can play d-mid, but it's highly unlikely, and if Maxi played defensive mid i would lose all respect for Camacho.
So with that being said, here's my projected starting 11:
Quim in goal, Nelson, Luisao, David Luiz and Leo, will round out the back four. Petit will be in front of the defense while Rui Costa will be playing in the position he was born to play, playmaker. On the wings, Maxi will be on the right, while on the left Camacho can go with either Rodriguez or DiMaria; Rodriguez if Camacho feels he has totally recuperated, DiMaria to play it safe. Up front it will be Nuno Gomes supporting Cardozo.
Camacho will continue to play Maxi on the right, despite his lack of speed or vocation to play the wing position, but this time Camacho has the argument of playing in a formation that is not so dependent on its wingers. Maxi can also help out in the midfield.
Look for Adu to come off the bench, Freddy has not played in sometime and i would be surprised if he doesn't get a few minutes in.
Not such a hard game for Benfica, from a competitive stand point, the real challenge is how the team will emerge from a week of controversy and speculation from the media. Katsouranis' current suspension and supposed exit talk by the media, rumors of all not being well within the club. It's been everything but smooth sailing for Benfica this week, the team's performance will be a true tell tale sign of how things are going, and if they have moved past last week's show of possible implosion, with the incident on the field and then falling apart at the end giving up the tying goal in the closing minutes of the game.
Benfica needs to get back on the winning track, Porto has a tough game against Braga and Benfica needs to pick up the tree points in the event Porto should slip.
3-0 Benfica
this is how it was in the first round:

Much Ado about Nothing

Much has been said about the incident that took place during Saturdays' game between Luisao and Katsouranis. In my opinion, the incident itself, has been made more than what it should. Several newspapers are having a field day with their speculations and rumours about the incident, and what will become of it. Why? -Because talking about Benfica sells newspapers, because making shocking headlines challenges the readers curiosity. The easiest thing to do is to speculate, and lose yourself in "what if"s.
For me, despite being an ugly and embarrasing sitation for all Benfica fans as well as Benfica, what happened is something that is very normal. Who hasn't gotten into it with a co-worker, and did things in the heat of the moment?
What happened on Saturday is a situation that can very much happen at anytime, the attitude that both players had, reflects on how they live the game and how they are passionate in playing for the team.
Camacho did the best thing in taking both players out, and that in itself showed character and authority on his part.
The Club suspended both players pending an investigation, and after hearing both parties, Benfica lifted Luisao's suspension, while Katsouranis remains suspended.
The reasoning here is that Luisao, as a sub-captain, has the right to call someone out on a miscue. On the other hand, Katsouranis' atittude was less than commendable, his reaction had tones of aggressiveness and the gestures that followed ended up being his biggest mistake, leading to heavy punishment.
Benfica's SAD is handling the situation, and i'm predicting that the players' suspension will be lifted this Sunday, exactly one week after it was first imposed. Anything after 1 week will be too much in my opinion. In the meantime the player hasn't been able to train in the clubs' grounds, which i have mixed feelings about.
In today's business world(professional soccer is nothing but a business these days)a suspension sanctioned by your employer means, you stay home without pay. Same situations applies here, but being that being physically fit is one of the most important qualities you can offer your employer, in this case a soccer team, why isn't the player allowed to train in the clubs grounds? Even if it's at a time the team is not on the grounds, that just baffles me. After the players suspension is lifted, it could very well take another week for the player to recuperate game level fitness, isn't that detrimental to the team?
Benfica's strong stance can be interpreted in a few ways, the first one being the most obvious one, there are no stars, the club's authority is the law and every player should follow that law or suffer the consequences. The other way can very much be one of not playing into the player's possible web of deceit. There were talks about the player not being happy and wanting to move on, he arrived late after the x-mas break, in what could have been seen as an act of defiance by Benfica. IF(big if) the player is creating some type of animosity between himself and the club, in order to be sold, Benfica will not fall for that. Katsouranis happens to be one of the clubs most valuable players as far as money goes. The club will not just look to sell the player just because there is animosity, and they are sending the message to the player, and any future plans by any other players, who might try to use the same type of tactics to get out of the club. It pretty much translates to, as long as you are a player under contract you will abide by the club's rules and regulations.
As far as the rumors that have surfaced involving a move to Atletico de Madrid, I feel that they are a bit of a stretch in my opinion. Katsouranis received a wage increase this past September, making him one of the highest paid players on the squad and money is definitely not an issue. Playing time is also not an issue as he is a regular starter, and part of the core of players that make up the Benfica starting 11. In my opinion, with the Euro 08 right around the corner, it would make no sense to transfer to a team where, not only will you have to adapt to your new teammates, but you will also have to compete for a starting spot and earn that spot. Granted Katsouranis is undeniably one of the best players in the Greek squad, and lack of playing would not prevent him from being called up, lack of playing could however, affect the form in which he arrives at this summer's competition, hurting him in the long run.
So, as far as a move is concerned i think it would be dumb on his part. As far as Benfica goes, the player will not go anywhere, and if he does, it will not be below 10mm. But i very much doubt they will let him out, even if it's just reinforce the point that just because you are unhappy, it doesn't mean you could just act out some scheme and the club will let you out.
To finish up, I'm expecting for the suspension to be over this Sunday, as anything past that will provoke some type of unrest by the fans towards Vieira, who already doesn't really sit all that well in the opinions of many. If the suspension does in fact end this sunday it'll just be a very normal situation.
Katsouranis is a valuable part of the squad and is needed by the squad, it would be a shame if the club forgot all the player has given the club, and judge him for his very last action.
On a lighter note - Maybe with Katsouranis out this weekend we could play in a 4-4-2.

Luisao -v- Katsouranis and other News

The hottest topic around all of Portugal's sporting world continues to be the incident between Luisao and Katsouranis. As you may recall, the incident took place during the second half of the Setubal-Benfica game, in which the 2 players got involved into a shoving match. The two players were immediately substituted by Camacho and were both suspended on Sunday, while an investigation was started by Benfica's SAD.
The incident took place after Katsouranis lost a ball that allowed Setubal to launch a quick counter in which Luisao had to foul the ball carrier in order to stop a dangerous attacking situation. Upon fouling Luisao proceeded to yell at Katsouranis for losing the ball and for costing him a yellow card, which he was awarded from the subsequent foul. Katasouranis didn't like being yelled at and responded in an agressive way, running towards Luisao to confront him, what followed was a sorry display of unprofessionalism, with obscene gestures from the Greek's part that culminated with both players shoving each other while team mates did their best to separate them.
On Monday, Benfica's SAD lifted the suspension imposed on Luisao, and the player was back in training today. Apparently the argument that lead to the suspension being lifted, was that Luisao is a sub-captain and had every right to call out Katsouranis on his mistake. After looking at some of the images, it is clear that Luisao yells at Katso and then turns his back and runs to take his position back in the defense, the Greek on the other hand, is the one that comes towards Luisao to confront him. These are some of the facts Benfica's SAD used in their investigation.
Katsouranis is still suspended and awaits the SAD's verdict. Both players are still waiting to find out how heavy the fine will be, but in the mean Luisao is already available to Camacho. Camacho would like the situation resolved as quickly as possible, so that it the air is cleared in the middle of the squad.
Following this morning's practice, Nuno Gomes, came out to the media room to talk to reporters, during the short press conference, Nuno apologized in the name of the group to all the Benfica fans and reiterated that such incident will not repeat itself.
On other news
Lyon will announce this wednesday the signing of Cesar Delgado, bringing to an end any speculation that the Benfica option was still on.
Also coming to a conclusion is Diego Souza's destination, according to Brazilian media reports the player is headed to Palmeiras. The Brazilian club is reported to have made a satisfactory offer to Benfica and his signing for Palmeiras will happen in the next couple of days.
The Algerian media is reporting Benfica's interest and subsequent preliminary negotiations for 21 year old center back Rafik Halliche. Halliche is currently hailed as one Argelia's best young talents, he currently plays for Hussein Dey and has a contract until 2010. According to the Argelian's club president, both him and Rafik are waiting on a Visa in order to travel to Lisbon to discuss the matter further with Benfica.

As a result of last night's game incident, Benfica has decided to suspend both Luisao and Katsouranis. Both players made their way to Benfica's Futebol Campus this morning, but were informed that they were suspended until further notice.
A decision that i couldn't agree more with.
On Other news

After Thoughts - Setubal v Benfica
Welcome to After Thoughts.
Each week I will post my reaction and opinion after each game.
I'll start off by saying that the incident that happened on the pitch was intolerable and Camacho did the right thing by sending both players off. I've seen team mates get angry over a busted assignment and I know that arguments will happen, but not to the extent at which Luisao and Katso took it. They are paid professionals. It sends a message to paying fans, members and the organization that there is no cohesiveness within the dressing room.
My friends what we are witnessing is a lack of leadership and comradere. I watch this Benfica and I do not see a team playing for each other, but professionals that are thrown together on the pitch and are expected to win week in and week out. How can this be fixed?! Simple, it starts and ends with one man, Jose Antonio Camacho. I know this is not the personell that he would like to have inherited, but this is his team. As manager of Benfica, the product on the field is a reflection of the training and discipline that he instills. He is the commander and they are his troops. Has he lost the dressing room?! Did he ever have control of the dressing room?! These are the questions that are now being asked by Benfiquistas.
Why?Why?Why?
Do we not play in a 4-4-2 formation. I know this has been asked before, but I'm starting to look at the reasons. One thing that keeps coming to mind is Rui Costa(I know I'm going to hear it from all of you=). His position in the middle is costing us that second attacking option. Cardozo does not have the skill to play as a lone striker, if he did he would've been sold to a team in a "bigger" league. Does Camacho feel like he is obligated to play el maestro? Is he afraid that Rui Costa cannot be productive in the 4-4-2 formation? because if he does not see that there is more production from the 4-4-2 than his 4-2-3-1, we will not succeed in any of the competitions.

Setubal 1 - Benfica 1 - New Year, Same story
In my preview of the game i had mentioned the fact that it wouldn't be an easy game for Benfica. Setubal is a decent, well organized team, their quick counter with numbers, and the way they keep their position lines compact is the reason why they have only lost one game this season and are in a decent table position. Even though Setubal's tying goal, in the dying minutes of the game, results from a typical attacking incursion, Benfica has no one to blame but themselves for the tie. A tie that, mind you, tastes more like a defeat than anything else. Between the tactical stubbornness of Camacho and the embarrassing scene between Luisao and Katsouranis, tonight's result does come as too much of a surprise.
On to the game:
Camacho started the following 11:
Quim in goal; the back four were Luis Felipe, Luisao, David Luiz and Nelson on the right; Petit and Katsouranis in front of the defense; Rodriguez, Rui Costa and Maxi supporting the lone forward, Cardozo.
Leo wasn't able to overcome his cold, and Luis Felipe got the nod, pushing Nelson to the left. Camacho's stubbornness is getting to me little by little. His insistence in the 4-2-3-1 with the wrong personnel is turning out to be a tell tale sign of his tactical weaknesses. What is it that he sees that no one else can see? Maxi is not a right mid, he is clearly a much better right back, as he lacks speed and first step explosiveness to penetrate the attacking third, one thing is true, Maxi is very strong on the ball and his work rate is excellent, but going forward he has nothing. Why not bet on a faster more skilled player for the right? Assis? DiMaria? or even Adu?
The other thing i'd like to point out is that Benfica is underusing Cardozo. For God's sakes, why hasn't Camacho seen that he plays so much better when he has someone next to him? There is no doubt in my mind that he is worth 9mm, but he is not to be used like that, why not build the team around him? I'm just annoyed, frustrated and irritated with the lack of vision on Camacho's side, seriously, i know that the team was not set up by him, and that he is limited to who he has to work with, but still.
Benfica dominated the first half with Setubal playing a block zone in front of the ball hoping to go on a counter, but the first half was clearly Benfica's half, dominating every aspect of the game, with the defensive midfield recuperating a lot of balls and launching the team into the attack. Despite controlling most of the game, Benfica could not penetrate the Setubal defense. At the 15 minute mark, Rodriguez had the clearest Benfica opportunity of the half, with one of his, already typical, headers that Setubal's keeper responded to with one of his best saves. The Uruguayan international would have to leave the field at the 30minute mark in what apparently looked like a hamstring injury. Camacho put in DiMaria in his place and Benfica continued their domination. Setubal did show some signs before the half with a couple of opportunities but nothing that would justify a change on their side of the scoreboard, same can't be said about Benfica. Had Benfica been up on the scoreboard, it wouldn't have been a surprise to many . Rodriguez 's injury forced Camacho to burn an early substitution, and complicated things for Benfica, which were now without one of their more influential players.
The second half was totally different from the first, as the roles were reversed, Setubal came out strong and took the initiative of the game, threatening Quim's goal 3 minutes into the half, Benfica seemed unimaginative, out of ideas to penetrate Setubal's defense, Rui Costa was forced to drop back into the midfield to "drive" Benfica's game, while Katsouranis was clearly in a more advanced position, Di Maria's interventions were intermittent and at times he seemed absent from the game.
At the around the 65 minute mark, Luisao and Katsouranis got involved in a shoving match and had to be separated by team mates before it got any uglier. The incident was preceded by a Luisao surgical foul in the midfield that resulted in both players exchanging words. It's unclear who started, or, who said what to who, but the fact is that 2 Benfica professionals should never have that type of behavior on the field especially during a game. I know that during a game your adrenaline is running rampant, and sometimes frustration leads you to lose your head, but there must be cut off point. Camacho, in his best move of the night, substituted both players at the same time, Luisao went straight to the locker room, while Katsouranis joined his team mates on the bench. Mantorras and Edcarlos came in the game. Mantorras joined Cardozo up front, dropping Rui Costa into center mid, while Edcarlos took Luisao's place. One of the substitutions was certainly not the move that Camacho had in mind, but the other one was something that gave the fans hope - 2 forwards. It wasn't too long (3mins) before the 2 forwards would bear its fruits, Mantorras finished off a Cardozo mis-settle and put Benfica ahead in the 71st minute. Benfica was able to go up on a scoreboard during a period in which Setubal was more dangerous. With 19 minutes left in the game, Benfica needed to control the game in order to avoid Setubal's attacking pressure, but with both Petit and Rui Costa at their physical threshold, Benfica had a hard time moving the ball around and eating up the clock, retreating into their midfield instead, and allowing Setubal to put all their effort into reaching the equalizer, which they would eventually get in the 88th minute.
Individual appreciation (1-10)
Quim - 6
Luis Felipe - 5
Luisao - 5 (for the incident)
David Luiz - 8
Nelson - 7
Petit - 6
Katsouranis - 5 (for the incident)
Rodriguez - 6
Maxi - 7 ( for his work rate)
Rui Costa - 8
Cardozo - 7
DiMAria -6 ( for his houdinis)
Edcarlos - 5 (
Mantorras - 7
With a more than likely Porto win tomorrow, Benfica seriously compromised their title chances as the gap will be 9 points.
On a last note, I have to give praise to Camacho for stepping up and showing his authority in the incident between Luisao and Katsouranis. I hope the club deals with these players in an exemplary way as scenes like that are not tolerable. As a Benfica fan, I hope both players publicly apologize to the fans for the scene they caused.
Hopefully there will be some news as far as reinforcements go, as Benfica needs a good showing in the Uefa.
