I’m assuming myself fully benfiquista, therefore my opinion isn’t neutral. So, the best team for the Portuguese championship, in my point of view, is SLBenfica. I can give a lot of reasons, but the main reason is that now-a-days SLBenfica has the best players in Portugal. Besides that and after almost financial rupture in the last years, Benfica is financially established and at the moment is a strong force approaching the players market. This new coach named Quique Flores is very young and appears to have good ideas and very strong charisma.
I agree with you, but, Often times the teams with the best players aren't always the "best teams". It's a little early to tell whether Benfica is a good team.
You hit a significant point -"Benfica is financially established" - like you, I think that, in itself, is the best backbone a succesful team can have.
I thought Rui Costa's work during the time when the transfer window was open was exceptional. The caliber of players that Benfica brought in, is definetely better than what we've seen in the past 5-7 years. This is all due to the financial health of the club. I agree with you that Quique is young and has charisma, he also is a coach who is a student of the game, and brings Benfica modern coaching methodologies, which are important in the ever evolving modern game.
As fans we should be patient with the project that is merely in its infant stages.
I'll be honest with you, despite the talent and the caliber of players Benfica has, if the team does not win the championship this year i will not be disappointed.
Here's some of the things i am expecting this year.
- Development of a team identity at the image of Flores.
- Development of a characteristic playing style.
- Season consistency, with dominance at home.
- Solid Uefa Cup participation, quarters as a minimum.
- Being able to retain vital players for next year.
These are some of the things that can make the season a successful one. Where we stand in May will depend on achieving all of these.
Retaining vital players will give continuity to the project, a project that has domestic championships and the return of Benfica to Europe's elite as it's main objective.
Let's hope that Quique is given enough time to work and in the long run put Benfica where it deserves to be.
Rodriguez is pathetic.
