Belenenses 1 - Benfica 0 - 2nd Loss of the Season.

Benfica suffers their second loss of the season, second straight for the Bwin. After losing to Porto 2 weeks ago, Benfica loses again, this time to Belenenses, and see the gap between them and, Bwin leaders, Porto increase to 10 points. Despite having won two games in between these two losses, Benfica see themselves in a losing streak domestically. It's still early to consider the league lost, but if it was already an uphill battle, the gradient just increased.

On to the game

No surprises in the starting 11, Camacho fielded his best four backs in Nelson, Luisao, David Luiz and Leo in front of Quim. In the midfield, Katsouranis was back next to Petit's side while the attacking midfield line was composed of Rodriguez and Maxi on the flanks, while Rui Costa played in the middle. Cardozo was the lone striker. Your habitual 4-2-3-1 if you will.
As i had mentioned in my preview, it wasn't going to be an easy game for Benfica, Belenenses has a very good team, with skilled players, that can create alot of problems if they are given the time and space to play. It was that space that was conceeded to Belenenses that allowed Belenenses to finish the half with close to 70% of percentage against Benfica's 30 something. Once again Petit and Katsouranis were very innefective. It is beyond me, how a team with 2 defensive midfielders can't control the game, and most of all, allow for the opposing midfield to touch the ball anyway and in any direction they please. One of Benfica's mistakes from the first half was giving Belenenses too much respect and allowing them to play while Benfica limited themselves to stay in front of the ball. The other crucial mistake was the lack of build up from the defensive midfield pivots. Benfica could not get any type of transition game through Petit and Katsouranis, instead they used and abused of the long ball which was the easiest to defend for Belenenses. Perhaps the long ball was the only choice being that Belenenses' men were playing a very tight zone, something that could have been evaded with a lot of movement in the midfield in the form of "checkbacks" to the player with the ball. Belenenses created a few opportunities and could have very well gone into half time with the scoreboard in their favor. Halftime rolled around and Benfica had done absolutely nothing with the exception of a shot from Rui Costa, right around the end of the half. Changes needed to be made for the second half, players needed to come out with a different attitude, and the work rate needed to increase, if Benfica wanted to win this game. Benfica did come out more offensive in the second half, trying to control the game but the midfield seemed to be too populated like in the first half with Benfica's men being watched closely. Benfica's incursions were coming from the defensive line, with David Luiz often bringing the ball into Belenenses half of the field, a clear sign the midfield players were allowing themselves to be closed down. Camacho made a double substitution at the 64 minute mark, Nuno Gomes came in for Maxi and Di Maria for Katsouranis. Rodriguez, who was sub par on what he has accustomed Benfica fans to, moved to the right while DiMaria went to the left side. Nuno Gomes stepped into the 9 slot while Rui Costa dropped back into a more central position. Personally i tought the defensive midfielder for a forward substitution should have came right at half time. It was clear that there were too many players in the middle of the field, and this was limiting Benfica on what they could do offensively, there was no room to maneuver in the middle. With the double substitution, the game opened up and Benfica became more dangerous, with Rui Costa taking control of Benfica's game and slicing the defense with precise passes to Benfica's wingers. The game was wide open and Belenenses took advantage of Benfica's all out attacking posture to launch a quick counter that would put them up on the scoreboard. Weldon ran down the line with Luisao in pursuit and cut inside leaving Luisao behind to put the ball past Quim, 71 minutes had gone by. Benfica had their best opportunity when Cardozo "shinned" a perfect cross from Di Maria that allowed the keeper to make an easy save. Adu came in for Rodriguez in the 79th minute but Freddy is fresh out of miracles, and honestly, 11 minutes is an unfair amount of minutes for Freddy, who could very well have been brought on sooner, as he seems to always change the complexion of the game, I'm still wondering why Camacho is the only one who doesn't see this.

To sum it up, not a good performance from Benfica tonight, who lost fairly, to a well organized Belenenses team that took advantage of Benfica's passiveness to assert themselves in the game. The first half ended up dictating the game's "motif" if you want to call it that, with Belenenses believing they could very well come away with the 3 points by playing an unhibited game. It's hard to comprehend the team's performance in this game, several players were rested, the team was coming off 2 important wins and seemed poised to finish up the year on a positive note. What went wrong? Lack of motivation? Looking towards holliday break perhaps? With many players returning to their countries to spend time with their families. No one can really say, both Rui Costa and Petit admitted to a terrible team performance in their post game interviews. One more game coming up this thursday against Estrela da Amadora, let's hope the team can finish the year on a high note.

I think Benfica played poorly, Belenenses crowded the midfield and were smart the way they played, and took advantage of what Benfica allowed them to do.
How many times did Leo go up the line? 1-2 maybe? You have to give some credit to Belenenses, but we clearly didn't do enough to win this game.

I can sense "uneasiness" from benfiqiustas with these two leauge losses. One more loss and the coaching of Camacho will undoubtedly be questioned.
Maybe its time to mix things up a bit, move from the 4-2-3-1 and bring in more attacking players from the beginning to get rid of these slow starts.
The opposition knew Rui Costa was key and played accordingly until the subs came in, I give them credit. I too am also surprised Camacho did not sense this and make the change sooner. Again I really believe that Rodriguez is an overrated player, I've noticed that he does not play well against good oposition(Porto, Milan, now this..) I understand what you mean about Di Maria, he has the talent but cannot control himself, like a young stallion, he needs to be reigned in and controlled.
When the defensive players are playing more offensively than some of the midfield there is a problem. I truly believe that this "core" squad needs a good winger who can help Rui Costa push the attack. David Luiz earned that contract extension week-in and week-out.
Cardozo had two easy chances that he should've put away, the cross from Di Maria and that lovely volley from Adu. Speaking of Adu, I understand that the kid needs to be "brought up", but it seems that he has the same qualities as Di Maria except more patience and a better presence on goal. I think maybe its his defense that has him coming in as a last minute choice.

Poor showing from our side. Hopefully we'll see some change in the next game.

yeah, i can see the restleness grow also, but a lot of Benfiquistas will be waiting for the January window and how the players who are coming will fit in the team, and ultimately start thinking that a good second half team can clearly be a good 08/09 team capable of challenging on all the competitions. This year, barring a monumental self destruction of Porto(very unlikely)we can say bye to the league.. there's still a lot of games, but Porto is just strong and most importantly consistent. The one thing about Adu is that he knows when to play with speed and he knows when to keep the ball at his feet. the play you mentioned above, that gave Cardozo the off-side volley is a terrific display of skill in tight quarters.
David Luiz MOTM for me.
Rodriguez's performance declines a lot without Leo's support, ever notice that? when he went to the right he might as well been pulled out as he dissappeared. Maxi does not fit the 4-2-3-1 system as he is too slow. I'm planning on exploring the 4-2-3-1 in an upcoming post, maybe during the holliday break.

Looking around on some forums i can see that Camacho is already being questioned, kingal. It's sad because this lack of regard for coaches has never gotten us anywhere. I mean we turned our backs on the coach who is possibly the best in all of football today, because we were stubborn and cheap. It's like they don't even know what a good coach looks like. Find a good one and stick with him Benfica. Stop going through the motions ever year!

And on the 4-2-3-1: it doesn't seem we're nearly good enough at it that we can play it all the time and "impose our will", so to speak. So, maybe we should become more versatile. That way we can adapt to our opponents and we're not predictable. I think it starts first with the players we acquire.

I'd like to leave 3 or 4 questions:

1) Can Camacho manage to stay in Benfica for a long time;

I hope so.

But it's clear that Camacho can't continue to use 3 defensive middfielders, 2 offensive middfieldders(Rodriguez and Costa, these guys never think as forwards, they like to pass and transport the ball) and just one forward;

Further, we can´t see any colective game in Benfica, we just see some individual efforts.

2) Is Benfica the best team to develop players like Adu or Di Maria??

I hope so.

But these guys need someone that teachs them how to play as a team. The question is: if Benfica can't do it how they will learn?

3) Quality of the players

Benfica has, in my opinion, the best group of players in Portugal (not the best starting eleven).

Of course we should play with more technical players in the team (and these guys must learn that they have to work as much as the others). For example, see what Rooney, Tevez, Giggs, Andersson and even Ronaldo work without the ball.

For example, Nuno Gomes works hard and he seems to be in great shape. Why he doesn't play??

4) 4231 or 451

With the players chosen by Camacho we are playinng in a 451.
For instance Portiguese Selection plays in this system, but we play with a center forward, and to wingers like Ronaldo and Simão, supported by Deco. At least 3 forwards and a 10.

Are Maxi or Rodriguez forwards??

No.

I believe Maxi will feet better as right defender or as a right midfielder in games we play 442 and need more defensive thinking.

Rodriguez must develop to a nº8 or nº10 and play as center middfielder. I see him as future nº8. In certain games in a 442 he could also play as a left middfielder.

We need to see in the field more time players like Nuno Gomes, Adu and Di Maria supporting Cardozo.

I sincerely hope that Camacho can manage to stay for a long time in Benfica. It was a good sign.

Netking,

@1) It comes back to our formation and the type of players we have. Maybe if we try Di Maria(left) and Nuno Assis(right) to support Rui Costa we could show a little more bite up front. With that being said, Di Maria is the only winger that I like on the team.

@2) If these two are used in their proper positions, I say yes.

Di Maria's training should be much more mental, he has to be taught to control his play a bit and to stay focused, as Fumas mentioned he goes "all out" and gets tired quickly. That being said he is the best left mid we have in terms of potential.

Adu is the opposite IMO, when he is asked to play in on the left or right he tends to drift more to the center up front, Which is good because he can score and has the talent to go at defenders, but it hinders the team collectively because he is not a winger that can push the ball up the flanks. This being said he gets himself in great positions.
(BTW - his "true" position has always been a hot topic).
In order for Adu to get playing time centrally his defensive play needs to improve, and I don't know if Benfica is working on this. His mental aspect of the game though is much better than people give him credit for, he can "see" the pitch very well.

@3) 100% agree with your thoughts here.

Nuno Gomes IMO is great as a support striker with his workrate.
I see more brilliance from him when he is supporting Cardozo than when is playing alone.

@4) I can see Rodriguez as a 10, with Di Maria and Nuno Assis supporting him.

"Maxi will feet better as right defender or as a right midfielder in games we play 442" - I agree with you here. He is good, but not fast enough to be on the flanks in a 4-5-1.

I just wanted to add a few things to KingAl's reponses as they were spot on.
1) i think Camacho's stay will ultimately depend on LFV, I think that if he comes out and tells the fans that Benfica is constructing a team that will be a major force within the next 3-4 years, Camacho will have a bigger error margin. When you come out and say that this is Benfica's best squad in the last 10 years your are putting an incredible amount of pressure on both players and coach. No fan in their right mind would think less of Benfica because of this.

to the second part of your question, i agree with KingAl, the system's productivity will ultimately depend on the players you have and how they fit in that system. Right now Benfica is bastardizing the 4-2-3-1, as they don't have the right personnel to take full advantage of this tactical set up. Nuno Assis is more of central player, and he often takes himself out of the game by staying next to the line, but I agree with KingAl, that he provides more of an offensive threat than MAxi.

2)I think being in the Benfica roster is the best thing for these 2 players, yes it would be beneficial for them to play in the positions where they feel most comfortable with, but playing in other positions can make them well-rounded players. when working with a young player you never know how he will respond/adapt to a different position, there are clear cases of succesful transitions.. Miguel(valencia) was a winger before. You never know when a player is going to take well to a new position. KingAl is spot on with Freddy's evaluation, he is more of a central player and some aspects of his game might be lacking in Camacho's eyes.

3)Nuno Gomes doesn't fit in the 4-2-3-1 he fits in the 4-4-2 as kingAl says he is a supporter not a finisher. it's true, people do not realize how much he works without the ball. I think that right now he is going to a period of lack of confidence, he doesn't own up and take shots which are clearly his, opting for passing instead.

4) Like i said before, Benfica is bastardizing the 4-2-3-1 - Portugal's national team has been playing with this system for quite sometime, but they have the right personnel. in order for this system to work properly you have to have speed on the wings, as KingAl says.
if i'm not mistaken, Rodriguez has played interior left for uruguay. He has the speed to play in the current system but i think that when he comes inside is when he's most dangerous. Di Maria is more of a pure winger, Rodriguez has the speed, but, his build and his never give up attitude make him a better inside player.

there's a lot of things that need to be considered, i think for as much as Rui Costa helps Benfica and is the most important player in the Benfica squad, his age hurts Benfica in a way, defensively he is very limited to what his stamina will allow him to do. Rui Costa is a pure 10 and right now he plays that role to perfection. It's when he has to play as the 9 that we see limitations. Rui Costa has never been a 9. that's Freddy, that's Gomes. We desperately need a good fast right winger to see the 4-2-3-1 work better, and a good transition D-mid, box-2-box with considerable speed. I think these 2 would better the squad considerably. there's currently no speed in Benfica's mid sector, Both Katsouranis and Petit are not that fast, and benfica's transition game suffers from that. Binya has more speed but needs time to "gel" with Petit, that could be the alternative but he will most likely be away playing the CAN08. let's see what comes out of the january window and how these players will fit in the squad.

Awesome points guys, great discussion, thanks for sharing your views.

Maybe just wishful thinking but What about the possibility of a 4-1-3-2?

The Wingers would have to give the lone d-mid more support(Perfect for Maxi & Rodriguez). Have Nuno Gomes support Cardozo up top. I feel that Benfica has the 2nd best Back 4 so they should not notice the loss of Katso/Petit/Binya that much. Binya might be better alone since he has more speed than the other 2.

What do you think??

Fumas said...

Right now, it seems that they are better equiped to play in that formation then the 4-2-3-1.
I was thinking that, when Petit is 100% they could very well just play with him in front of the defense. Let's see what happens with the market.. Delgado looks to be out, Dica's name has come up again.. if we could pick up a technical and speedy 9, we could very well give porto a run. I am baffled as to why benfica is not taking another look at Souza. Thanks to jason86 for the link to the Video, clearly a box to box guy, able to play on the right or left, good technique and strong on the ball.bring him to Europe and watch his value triple, especially if he has a good olympic run. benfica are being shortsighted about this player.. but in their defense, Gremio has the option, and right now they are trying everything to keep him.. benfica wants 4mm, they have offered 1.5mm.

This is what i'd do to LFV if he doesn't bring him back.
