Benfica News December 11,07

Marc Zoro's name is part Ivory Coast's preliminary roster for the African Nations Cup (CAN 08) to take place between the 20th of January and the 10th of February, the event is taking place in Ghana.

Quim left this morning's practice with a knee injury. He will be evaluated tomorrow.

Rumours of a couple of players being tied to Benfica are surfacing. The first one being Cesar Delgado, a twenty six year old Argentinian forward who currently plays for Mexico's Cruz Azul, the club's president has publicly denied any negotiations between benfica and Cruz Azul. The other one is Christian Benitez, an Equatorian young promise who plays upfront. He just finished representing Santos Laguna in the Mexican league. His agent has confirmed contacts from Benfica, and told the Equatorian media that there is an offer on the table that they are currently looking at.

Marcel, who was on loan at Gremio has been let go by the club, he will however remain in Brasil as his future will most likely go through another loan at another Brazilian club.

Luis Felipe Vieira just came back from a quick trip to Argentina, apparently he is trying to by cardozo's pass in it's totallity. Benfica only owns 80% of Cardozo's pass currently.

Benfica just signed a 17 year old Brazilian to a 3 year deal by the name of Fellipe Bastos. Bastos is a product of Botafogo's development program, having represented and captained Brazil's U-17 team that played in this years Pan-American games. Bastos is a defensive midfielder but can play in any central midfielder position. He will integrate the junior team under Joao Alves' command.

Apparently, January it'll be the end of the Benfica line for Bergessio, the player has already been informed by Camacho that he will be one of the players being cut from the squad. the Argentinian is currently studying several offers and will most likely return to Argentina. Andre Diaz will most likely have the same destiny.

Cristian Rodriguez made his full return to training today.

As far as i know Bastos is to play with the Juniors until the end of the year. He's flexible though he can play several positions in the middle. Ribeiro is on the way out.. see the post above. I very much doubt benfica will pick up a midfielder with Defensive characteristics.. I think they need a back up for the 10 slot and MAYBE an 8, everything else would be a waste of money, imo. Souza's situation is still up in the air, I heard Camacho wanted to get a look at him, I think he's reluctant to come back to Portugal. Benfica can stand to make a lot of money with this player, especially if they hold him past the olympic games.

I think Souza could challenge for a starting roll on our current squad. Possibly take Maxi's spot on the right. They could groom him to become Petit's DM successor, too. What he said about not coming back to Portugal, I think was a tactic to get a salary raise. After all, isn't he the best player on Gremia now? Benfica really should bring him back and let Camacho see what he can do.

I mentioned Rosina earlier. I've heard that he is at his best when he is playing behind the striker(s). I don't think Benfica will sign him because he's too expensive but I keep thinking about it and i'm starting to like the possibilites. Let's say, just for fun, considering some of these rumors, the midfield next year could be

-----------Petit/Souza/Binya----Katsouranis/Souza/Binya---
Souza/Maxi/Benitez?--Rosina/Assis--C.Rodriguez/Di Maria

But how would we do without Rui Costa? :(

yeah, i think Souza deserves a look, simply because of the year he had for Gremio. he can play the Maxi position for sure, but i think Camacho wants someone with more speed for that position. Benfica should not "lose" Souza. If he is good enough for the Brazilian Olympic team he should be good enough for Benfica, and i do think he could fight for a spot in the starting 11.
i actually got a chance to catch a bit of Rosina's game this weekend, he's very fast and pops up anywhere in the attacking third.. but he is espensive like you said.
i like all of your combinatons i just think that Assis is the odd man out. I think he is very average currently. There's no guarantee Rui will be with Benfica next year, if the timing of his retirement from international duty is any indication on how he likes to leave, one could very well think of this year as his last. The last thing he would want to do would be to not be able to give 100% of the talent he has. A player of his class knows when his time has come, and although many fans still think that he can play another year, only Rui knows.
